As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Ailsa Craig Gala Days, it's important to remember the roots and traditions that have made this community event so special. One of those cherished traditions was the beloved turtle racing, which was initiated by the creative minds of Charles Garrod, Douglas Williams, and Doug McNair back in 1974. For years, Ailsa Craig Gala Days became synonymous with the excitement and joy of turtle racing. Inspired by the Great Turtle Derby in Boissevain, Manitoba, Charlie Garrod and his wife Ruth brought the idea to our town, starting with a small wooden board and four racing turtles in front of Charlie's shoe store on Main Street. The enthusiasm and interest from the community led to the creation of a tower and a starting gate, turning turtle racing into a much-anticipated event.
Although turtle racing is no longer part of Gala Days due to regulations, its impact and significance remain ingrained in the memories of those who experienced it. To honour the legacy of Charlie Garrod and his contribution to our community, we are thrilled to introduce our new Gala Days mascot, "Charlie" the Turtle! Charlie embodies the spirit of friendship, tradition, and the joy that Gala Days brings to our town. With a shell full of memories and a heart filled with community pride, Charlie will be joining us this Gala Days to engage with everyone and share the excitement leading up to our 50th Anniversary celebration.
